Updated Gathering Guidelines

In conjunction with the Governor’s new executive order and move into phase three of reopening the State, we are adjusting our gathering guidelines.

Effective This Sunday, October 4th. Based on the Governor’s executive order, issued on September 25th, we will return to our original policy concerning masks. We leave it up to you whether or not to wear a mask at church gatherings. We ask you to respect those who choose to do the opposite of you. Love, kindness, and humility are vital at this time, as always. Nursery workers will continue to wear masks when serving in the nursery.

Effective, Sunday, October 11th. In keeping with the Governor’s move to phase three of reopening Florida, we plan to no longer ask people to register for Sunday services. Starting a week from this Sunday, people can seat themselves in the auditorium or fellowship hall. We ask that you remain mindful of others and maintain some level of distancing as you seat yourself.

We will continue to sanitize the facilities before each Sunday morning gathering. In addition, we continue to ask those who are sick to remain home and watch the livestream. If you have any questions or concerns, please see the FAQ document. If you still have questions, contact one of the elders. We are happy to discuss questions and concerns.

Regathering as a Church

The Elders are grateful to present this plan outlining our process for regathering. This plan seeks to adhere to the guidelines presented by our Governor. We do plan on continuing to honor our government and will need to remain in Phase 1 of our proposed plan until the Governor opens the next phase of his plan.

on June 7, in-person services will return.
  • Those planning to attend will need to sign up in advance. You will be sent instructions with how to do this early next week.
  • Children are welcome and encouraged to join their parents in the service.
  • Here are a few additional guidelines for our In-Person gatherings:
    1. We ask you NOT to attend an in-person service if, in the 14 days prior to service: (1) you have had contact with someone who has tested positive or who is undergoing testing for COVID-19, (2) you are experiencing or have experienced signs or symptoms of flu or COVID-19, or (3) you have traveled on a commercial plane or visited a place that is considered a hot spot for community spread.
    2. If you are 65+ or are in a high risk category, we encourage you to regather at your own speed, not anyone else’s. Do what is best given your situation.
    3. Please arrive for the service at least 15 minutes early.
    4. We will seat people in the auditorium and fellowship hall based on which room they sign up for. Auditorium: Enter through the main doors. Fellowship Hall: Enter through the back door under the Annex breezeway.
    5. Ushers will walk each household to their appropriate seat. Seating will be limited and spaced in both the auditorium and Fellowship Hall, and we ask you to help us maintain proper distancing while at church.
    6. The offering plate will not be passed. Give online by mail or using the offering plates near the exit.
    7. We will not observe communion until phase 2 of reopening.
    8. We will leave it up to you whether or not to wear a mask. We will also trust you to respect those who choose to do the opposite of you. Love, kindness, and respect are vital at this time. (If you have not already, we encourage you to read Navigating Different COVID-19 Recovery Convictions).
    9. We will sanitize the church facility prior to every gathering and hand sanitizer will be provided by each entrance.
    10. Some Small Group Bible Studies will begin to meet in-person. Several groups will continue with the Zoom format for the time being.

We love you if you are with us June 7th, and we love you if we are not going to see you for a while. If you have any specific questions about our plan or what to expect at the service, please email [email protected].

COVID-19 Update

As Governor DeSantis continues to give the go-ahead to reopen sectors of society, the elders have prayerfully developed what we believe is a wise course of action for resuming Grace Church’s gatherings. Given the ongoing health concerns and social distancing guidelines that are still in place (see the Governor’s “Safe. Smart. Step-by-Step” plan), we believe a careful and phased approach to restarting is prudent. The elders will present this detailed plan to the deacons early next week. Once the plan is finalized, it will be distributed to the congregation.

Our Basic Plan

  1. We intend to open the auditorium and fellowship hall for those that are able and willing to come on Sunday, June 7th, for the 10:45 am worship service. Our plan includes social distancing. We will not resume in-person Sunday school or nursery ministry at this point.
  2. We will continue to live-stream for the foreseeable future since we know that not everyone can or should return right away.

How You Can Help

First, continue praying for us to have godly wisdom.

Second, wear humility well. The world is good at being overly confident in personal opinions and dividing over such things. We desire our church to model the mindset of Christ: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Phil. 2:3-4). We encourage you to read the following article on this topic: “Navigating Different COVID-19 Recovery Convictions.”

Third, send us questions you have. We plan to release a “Frequently Asked Questions” sheet with our plan and we would like to be sure we address the questions you are asking (email [email protected]).

We recognize that these past two months have been something of a “wilderness experience.” Nonetheless, the Lord has ordained it to accomplish His perfect plans in our lives, our church, and our world. May we, His people, look more like Jesus during and after this time of testing.

COVID-19 Update

Please pray for the elders as we work over the next couple of weeks to gather data and draft a plan for resuming our church gatherings. We need prayer for how to best handle both the physical and spiritual realities before our church.

When it comes to physical needs, we desire that God will use our research to provide the information we need to make prudent decisions (Prov. 19:2). Our goal is to promote the welfare of God’s people and our community when we resume gathering.

When it comes to spiritual needs, we desire that God will enable us to preserve the unity and love of the church family. With an issue like this, there will be a wide array of opinions and convictions — almost all of which will not be inherently sinful or righteous. So, pray for us and for each member of Christ’s body to be humble (preferring the interests of others above self, Phil. 2:1-4), and loving (not insisting on his or her own way, 1 Cor. 13:4-5). Pray that God will enable GCOT to preserve the unity of the body and to evidence that God’s Spirit is at work in us.

Over the next couple of weeks, the elders will continue gathering information from state and local officials, medical professionals, and other churches. We will form a draft plan which will then be presented to the deacons and revised as needed. We hope to be able to inform the church of the details in early June.

Steps Toward a Reopening Plan

In the providence of God, we have now been kept apart for nearly two months. We long to be able to physically gather together soon to worship and fellowship as a church family.

As you know, our government officials are beginning to reopen various sectors of society. The elders are monitoring the guidance being issued by Governor DeSantis, the CDC, and others. We desire to resume our gathered church life in a phased approach that mitigates risk. Our goal is to have a plan that enables us to take one another’s concerns into account and to cooperate with reasonable government requests as these leaders seek to manage civil society.

With that in mind, we are drafting a plan for a phased reopening. The plan will contain benchmarks for determining when to move forward with each stage of reopening as well as a strategy for lessening some of the risks associated with gathering (e.g., social distancing, etc.). We will provide more details about this in the coming weeks.

COVID-19 Plan Update

We will continue the current course of suspending in-person gatherings through the month of April. This decision is prompted by the president extending his guidelines to avoid gathering in groups of more than ten people through April 30th. We have reviewed Governor DeSantis’ “stay at home” order, and it allows for us to continue with the necessary logistics for live-streaming.

A Few Reminders

  1. Livestream on Sundays. We will continue to live stream a time of worship at 10:45am at www.gcot.org/live.
  2. Giving. You can give by mailing checks to 425 McDaniel Street, Tallahassee, FL 32303 or online payment at www.gcot.org/giving.
  3. Stay Connected. Use the directory to contact and pray for one another. If you are a member and need a copy, email [email protected].
  4. Ask for Help. If you need prayer, help, or counseling, contact one of the elders or deacons (you can email [email protected] if you do not have contact information).

Plans for Staying Connected While We Cannot Gather

We are facing an extraordinary situation in which God’s providence keeps us from gathering. We are also blessed with the providence of living in a time with online technology. We will use the technology God has given us to connect on Sunday morning around the Word of God and song. We recognize that this is not the same as gathering, but we believe it will be edifying to simultaneously hear the Word and sing, even if we are not able to do it in the same room. The livestream will begin on Sunday mornings at 10:45 a.m. at gcot.org/live. Please note that this is new territory for us, so we ask that you are patient as we work out any kinks.

Ministry of the Word. In addition to an online sermon, we desire to continue to minister the Word to one another and in small Bible studies. Some of these groups will meet online, some may suspend meeting, and others will gather physically (in groups of under 10). If you are in a Bible study group, your leader will contact you. In addition to this, we also encourage you read, sing, and pray the Bible at home with your family and/or over the phone with others in the church.

Generous Giving. Our Member Commitments state, “We commit to give cheerfully as the Lord provides for us in order to sustain the ministry of this body and its missionaries and to show that our treasure is in heaven and not on earth” (2 Cor. 9:6-12). You can give via mail (Grace Church of Tallahassee, 425 McDaniel Street, Tallahassee, FL 32303) or online (gcot.org/giving).

Community and Fellowship. We want to be attentive to ways we might care for one another during this time. We also want to continue our fellowship by communicating with one another. Perhaps you can use some time on Sunday to call or email a few fellow members. Think of those you might typically pass in the hall at church. Miss seeing them in person, thank God for them, and call them to chat for a few minutes.

Prayer. Keep praying for one another. Now is an excellent time to start using the member directory to pray for fellow members (this directory is only available to GCOT members). If you would like an updated directory, email [email protected].

Evangelism. Many of our unbelieving neighbors are thinking more about their mortality now than they were a month ago. In reality, death is always a moment away from each of us, even when there is no pandemic. Perhaps the Lord will use this crisis to cause them to give thought to their ways. However, they will only be saved by the gospel message. Pray the Lord will give you opportunities to be his ambassador during this time.

Biblical Church Leadership. The elders want to shepherd you and care for you. We see ourselves as essential personnel caring for souls. Please call us if you need prayer, help, or encouragement. When it comes to physical needs, you can call any of the deacons, and they can coordinate help for you (i.e., grocery or medicine pick-up, etc.).

Our Member Commitments begin with our devotion to Jesus Christ. May we demonstrate that Jesus is our treasure during this trying time by battling anxiety with faith (Matt. 6:25-33) and fighting any pride that might cause us to judge others or to assume that our perspective on the current situation is the only right one (Phil. 2:1-4).

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all.

Temporarily Suspending Our Gathering

We have decided that fulfilling our God-given obligation to our government entails suspending our gathering as a church for worship for at least the next two Sundays (March 22nd and 29th). We will also postpone all Bible studies with over 10 people in attendance (If you have questions about your particular Bible study’s plans, contact your study leader). This decision is prompted by President Trump’s request that people not gather in groups of more than 10 people until at least April 1, 2020 (here is the link to the guidelines).

We did not make this decision lightly. For Christians, gathering to worship is a priority and privilege that we take very seriously. However, this decision was informed by the biblical imperatives to love our neighbor and submit to our governing authorities (Rom. 13:1-2). We do not view it as sin to submit to the government’s request to suspend meeting temporarily to aid in their efforts to preserve life.

The elders will send out an email on Friday with more information about how we plan to remain connected as a church body over the coming couple of weeks. This information will also be posted on this page and our social media accounts.

If you have any questions, specific prayer requests, or needs, please contact one of the elders.

A Christian Response to the Coronavirus Threat

Pastor Rod Bunton helps us see a proper Christian response to the uncertainty of the Coronavirus health threat. This message was given prior to his sermon in 1 Corinthians on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

Our COVID-19 Response Plan

In light of the many closures associated with the COVID-19 virus, we wanted to explain why we currently still plan to hold our normal Sunday activities this week.

Governor DeSantis issued a statement on Thursday encouraging people to consider canceling or postponing “mass gatherings.” A “mass gathering” is defined by the CDC as a gathering of more than 1,000 people. Other sources have indicated that the number should be 250. Our gathering is less than that threshold, so we are not violating the government’s request. However, we will consider suspending services for a period of time if the situation warrants it.

Below is a chart illustrating how we plan to evaluate the developing situation and make decisions.

This chart is from Daniel Chin’s Christianity Today article, “Should Your Church Stop Meeting to Slow COVID-19? How 3 Seattle Churches Decided.”

Since there are currently no cases in our community, we plan to continue meeting at this time. This may change as the situation develops. We ask that those attending Sunday services follow the guidelines we sent out in a previous message (see below).

Our desire is to avoid panic, to love our neighbors, and to honor our government. Therefore, we will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments accordingly. Should we need to make changes to our gatherings, we will communicate this through email, on our Facebook page, our Twitter account, and this website.

We understand that some people, especially our older members, might stay home for a couple of weeks in order to limit possible exposure. If you need help during this time, please contact one of the pastors or deacons.

Responding to COVID-19

As Christians, we know that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. So, we do not panic in the face of sickness or death. As a church family, we desire to love God by demonstrating faith in times of uncertainty. We also want to love our neighbors by taking wise precautions.

What we are doing

We are increasing our efforts to sanitize the church facilities.

We’re asking each one of you to help in the following ways

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water (for at least 20-30 seconds).
  • Use a tissue whenever you cough or sneeze and dispose of the tissue when done.
  • Try to remember to limit handshakes and hugs (these are great ways to show hospitality and brotherly affection, but at this time, the best way to show love is to refrain).
  • Please take a couple of Sundays at home if one of the following situations apply to you: (1) you’ve traveled, within the past 14 days, to a country that is experiencing “sustained community transmission” of the virus (according to the CDC website that currently includes China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, Hong Kong, or Japan), (2) if you know you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, or (3) if you or your family is sick with virus-like symptoms. We’ll miss you, but taking the opportunity to be cautious or to recover at home before you return to church is good for you and everyone at GCOT. The sermon will be uploaded to the church’s website, so you can watch when you are able.

Basics about COVID-19

COVID-19 can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth, including when an individual coughs or sneezes. These droplets may land on objects and surfaces. Other people may contract COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. Symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as many as 14 days following exposure. Most people recover from COVID-19 without needing special treatment. The elderly and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems, and diabetes, are more likely to develop serious illness.
